A Cat3 telephone jack (Category 3) is a standard connector designed to terminate twisted pair cabling for analog telephone, fax, and low-speed data applications (up to 10 Mbps). Commonly appearing as an RJ11 6P4C/6P6C jack, it enables reliable, high-fidelity voice communication in residential and commercial buildings. They are primarily used for connecting landline phones, modems, and fax machines to telephone lines. These are typically keystone jacks that snap into standard wall plates, surface boxes, or patch panels. They usually feature 110-type IDC (Insulation Displacement Connector) terminals, allowing for punch-down termination of 22-28 AWG wire. While designed for Cat3 cables, they are compatible with older 4-wire or 6-wire telephone systems. Many modern Cat3 jacks offer a tool-free installation, which does not require a punch-down tool. Although largely replaced by Cat5e/Cat6 for networking, Cat3 remains a cost-effective standard for voice infrastructure.
