A fiber pigtail is a short, single-strand (or multi-strand) fiber optic cable with a factory-pre-installed connector on one end and exposed bare fiber on the other. It is primarily used for precise, high-performance fusion or mechanical splicing into fiber cables, effectively terminating cables in patch panels or enclosures. They simplify the termination process by avoiding field-installed connectors, ensuring lower, more consistent, and reliable loss. One end is terminated with a connector (e.g., LC, SC, ST, FC), while the other is stripped for splicing. Available in single-mode (9/125um) and multi-mode (OM1/OM2/OM3/OM4/OM5) fiber types, they are commonly available as simplex (1 fiber) or duplex (2 fibers). They are widely used in data centers, telecom networks, security systems, and to connect fiber-optic cables using fusion/mechanical splicing. Armored pigtails (with steel tubes for protection against rodents) and waterproof pigtails (for outdoor/harsh environments) are available. A pigtail has one connector (one end is raw fiber for splicing), whereas a patch cord has connectors on both ends.
