A PoE (Power over Ethernet) extender, or repeater, is a networking device that extends the standard 100-meter(328-foot)distance limitation of Ethernet cables to 200 meters, or further by regenerating both data signals and electrical power. They are used to connect remote devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points without needing local power outlets or extra cabling. Typically it increases the distance between the PoE source (switch/injector) and the device to 200 meters or more, with some solutions reaching up to 400-800 meters. Most PoE extenders are powered by the incoming PoE line, eliminating the need for a separate power source at the extender's location. They are generally plug-and-play, placed in-line between the power source (PSE) and the powered device (PD). It is essential for long-distance installations like IP security cameras in parking lots or large facilities, as well as outdoor wireless access points. While they allow long-distance, some extenders may drop data speeds to 10Mbps in extended modes, which is sufficient for most IP camera applications. PoE extenders often support IEEE 802.3at/af/bt standards, offering various power outputs to support high-power devices.
