A Power Distribution Unit (PDU) is a device with multiple outlets designed to distribute electric power to servers, networking equipment, and other devices, primarily within data center racks. It acts as a sophisticated, high-capacity power strip, often taking 3-phase power input and distributing it to 1-phase outlets, improving rack efficiency and cable management. Basic PDU provides standard, reliable power distribution from a source to multiple devices. Intelligent/Monitored PDU (iPDU) features network connectivity for remote management, real-time monitoring of power consumption, and environmental sensors (e.g., temperature) to prevent downtime. Switched PDU is a type of intelligent PDU that allows administrators to remotely turn power on/off to individual outlets to reboot frozen equipment. It manages high power loads (often 22 kVA or more) in IT environments and reduces clutter by aggregating power cables within a rack. It also provides circuit protection and prevents overloads and allows IT staff to monitor and control power usage from anywhere. While often used in data centers, PDUs are also used in other environments, including industrial and automotive applications to manage electrical loads.
